Project description

The Ion Torrent TM semiconductor chip technology makes it possible to rapidly generate millions of sequences in a scalable fashion. Small chips can be used to resequence specific genes, while the bigger chips can be used to sequence a complete exome or genome. The Personal Genome Machine TM (PGM TM) Sequencer is used to run the smaller chips, while the Ion Proton TM Sequencer is used to run the bigger chips. The technology is disruptive because it opens the possbility to resequence a complete human genome in one day for less than 1000 euro. This is approximately 10 times faster and 10 times cheaper compared to the current technologies such as the state-of-the-art Illumina HiSeq2000 platform. On top of this comes the fact that the Ion Personal Genome Machine TM (PGM TM) Sequencer and the Ion Proton TM Sequencer are relatively cheap to acquire compared to current next generation sequencing equipment.
