Project description

The IT sector is one of the few industries that does not aim for a structural reduction of its ecological footprint in the short term. It argues that increased digitalization will ensure that the rest of society can become more sustainable. However, there is no conclusive evidence for this. Data centers are being built at a very high rate to support future digital applications, and the rise of artificial intelligence has only accelerated this process. As a result, the IT sector is rapidly becoming an energy- and water-consuming industry with a large and difficult-to-recycle waste stream in the form of discarded hardware. Consequently, the IT sector may eventually no longer be welcome in Europe due to its high pollution levels. The objectives of this project are to (i) further map out the issues, (ii) develop sustainable alternatives to current solutions, and (iii) promote sustainability thinking in the IT sector.
