Project description
This research project concerns a global research project regarding Bovine Herd Health.
The aim of the project is to investigate in depth a number of issues that are of decisive importance
for the economics of cattle herds but also for the health and welfare of the animals. For example, research will
be conducted into the importance of the uterine microbiome on pregnancy rates in dairy cows and how fertility
on dairy farms in general can be improved. In addition, it will be investigated to what extent streptococci
are involved in the pathogenesis of digital dermatitis, the most common disease of the claw (skin) in cattle.
Previous research conducted by our team suggests that these bacteria are involved, but the pathogenesis is
not fully understood. Since both fertility and claw health are of great importance for the longevity of
the animals, special attention will also be paid to this, especially as this is a very important economic
factor. The ultimate aim is to use the results of this research project to not only improve the economy
of our cattle farms, but also the animals' fertility, (claw) health and therefore their well-being and longevity.
