Project description

How was the imaging of Celtic women in Victorian fine arts during the Celtic Revival? Using 18 cases - comprising painting, sculptures and illustrations - from England, Wales and Ireland, the paradoxical (conservative and progressive) impact on this 19th century patriarchal society will be examined, taking into account the context of the first emancipation wave in the UK and Ireland.
