For the first time in 42 years there are municipal amalgamations in Flanders. Despite the fact that these reforms are increasingly being questioned internationally, mergers remain popular in many European countries. This research aims to study the effects of those mergers in Flanders, both in terms of the efficiency of the municipal administration and the functioning of local democracy.
