The use of psychotropic drugs, such as sleeping pills and antidepressants, is high in Belgium and often much longer than the recommended duration. UGent colleagues from two faculties, united under Psychopharmaca@UGent, are striving for the rational use of these medications. Our focus is on both preventing unnecessary initiation of these medicines and reducing the long-term use of them.
Our research findings are of great societal importance, and to share them with general practitioners and pharmacists, we are launching two initiatives:
1. A podcast series offering practical guidance for GPs and pharmacists, aimed at the appropriate use of psychotropic drugs among their patients, including tapering these medication
2. An online continuing education program on the appropriate use of psychotropic drugs and the launch of the term 'psychotropic stewardship' during the 10-day Mental Health Awareness campaign. By launching this term, we aim to emphasize the role of pharmacists and doctors in the appropriate use of psychotropic medications.
