Project description

A search for the end of the Mendeleev table is an important part of the project. The existence of the heaviest elements is determined by a subtle interaction between the individual and the collective behavior of the protons and neutrons in the atomic nucleus. For example, with the planned laser spectroscopic measurements, we can determine the shape of these atomic nuclei and compare them with the most advanced theoretical descriptions. Furthermore, we will perform precision measurements of the decay of specific radioactive nuclei to study new aspects of the fundamental interaction. Finally, the new possibilities of GANIL will allow us to measure key nuclear reactions that should reveal predicted but unobserved correlations between the building blocks of the atomic nucleus.
