Project description

Due to climate change, crop plants are exposed to higher average temperature and more frequent temperature extremes, and this has a negative impact on their growth and yield. Furthermore, climate change leads to weakened plant immunity caused by pathogens thriving under high temperature conditions. To improve thermotolerance and disease resistance in crops (e.g. wheat), it is crucial to understand the molecular and biochemical basis of how crop plants respond to a combination of abiotic and biotic stress. Jasmonate (JA) signalling plays an important role in plant tolerance to abiotic stress or resistance to biotic stress conditions. While post translational modifications (PTMs) contribute extensively to protein activity, the impact of PTMs on the diverse JA signalling pathways is still largely unknown. Previously, I identified the heat-induced dephosphorylation of the JA receptor COI1 in wheat, which affects the interaction with ASK1. In this project, I will identify and characterize the specific kinases and phosphatases that modulate JA signal transduction in a high temperature and pathogen stress context. The identification of specific regulators of JA signalling will pave the way to avoid compromised growth and yield under environmental stress conditions.
