The relationship between design as an epistemic practice and the understanding of the tools by which design is implemented - all sorts of architecture drawings-, has been little explored in academic reserach. Historically, the design sciences are heavily colored by the Design Method Movement, which describes design as a cognitive process but has little room to address the material means, media or techniques by which designs are implemented. However, further digitization and the use of generative AI necessitate a more thoughtful reflection on the designer's activity.  Using a literature review and archival research, the role of architectural drawing in architectural practice is investigated.
