Project description

This research investigates the position of the Chinese Chan master Hui Hong (1071-1128) in the then fundamental debate within Chan circles on the use of rhetoric in transmitting the doctrine from master to disciple. Hui Hong's position derivates from the dominant trend of the time to accentuate introspection and 'transmission without words'.
