Project description

Natural fires care common in many parts of the world and they are an integral part of many terrestrial ecosystems, including the Mediterranean ones. However, during the recent decades, the number of wildfires has increased in the countries of the Mediterranean region. The megafires of Peloponnese that occurred during the summer of 2007 as well as the catastrophic fire of Attiki, in 2009, highlight the fact that forest fires is the biggest natural hazard in Greece. Therefore, detailed and current information concerning the location and extent of the burned areas and post-fire vegetation situation is important in order to assess economic and ecological effects. In this context, the aim of the proposed research is to assess the Proba-V data for burned area mapping and post-fire monitoring in Mediterranean ecosystems.
