Project description

Ferro-electric liquid crystals (LCs) have an intrinsic permanent polarization and switch much faster than the well-known nematic LC. Recently the nematic ferro-electric LC phase (NFLC) has been discovered, which can be used in new display and photonic applications. The existing smectic ferro-electric LC phase will be combined with patterned photoalignment to realize periodic structures with arbitrary tilt of the helical axis. These components can be used in switchable augmented reality devices. The NFLC material which be poled by photoalignment or by the application of a voltage will be evaluated for use in fast photonic modulators, second harmonic generation devices and energy storage.
