Project description
This PhD project focuses on the study of visual aspects of multilingual phenomena in documentary papyri from late antiquity, and particularly phenomena related to script choice. It uses theoretical concepts and methods from socio-semiotics, sociolinguistics, and language contact studies, relating non-standard writing practices to their socio-historical environment, to obtain a more complete understanding of everyday multilingual communication in Egyptian antiquity.
