Project description

During the Anthropocene, the human epoch, the world has witnessed a dramatic increase in various forms of environmental degradation, including climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. The experience and anticipation of environmental loss - the loss of individual plant and animal species, entire ecosystems, cherished landscapes, or a liveable planet as such - cause intense grief, anxiety, despair, guilt, and anger. This project at the intersection of memory studies and the environmental humanities will explore the role of literature and art in coming to terms with the often disenfrancised and marginalized emotions associated with environmental loss. It will examine whether and, if so, how artistic mourning practices help bring about social acceptance and legitimacy of ecological emotions so that they can be processed and acted upon more adequately.
