Development of novel nano- and micro- carriers for biological applications is particularly significant for both understanding of biomolecular processes and lucrative industrial applications including treatment of diseases and plants growth regulation. The goal of this project is to develop novel carrier systems based on calcium carbonate particles, which will be applied to: 1) protect and promote action of anti-cancer therapeutic enzymes for bio-medicine and pharmacology, and to 2) provide controlled release of encapsulated nutrition in plants for agriculture. A new type of carriers is expected to emerge enabling efficient action of enzymes and controllable, slow release kinetics of nutrition. The project will focus on optimization of relevant properties of particles (loading capacity, size, shape, porosity, charge, morphology, etc), enhancement of intracellular uptake, enzymatic activity, and plants growth. It will also contain several state-of-the-art elements, including ground-breaking approach to simultaneously protect therapeutic enzymes and activate the substrate, and innovative approach to controlled release (pH-based method and recrystallization of particles) for plants growth regulation. All these innovative aspects are expected to provide opportunities for future applications of these carriers in anticancer therapy, siRNA delivery, nanomedicine.
