Project description

This research uses both sociological methodologies and the frameworks of theatre studies and literary analysis to come to a critical analysis of the current position and role of an institutional dramaturg in the Flemish-Dutch field of theatre. It aims to bring insight into the labor of institutional dramaturgy and show the interdisciplinary approach that is needed for theatre scholars for an in-depth analysis. To first put into perspective the different positions in the field, this study will analyze the artistic planning and choices of a select number of city-theatres in Flanders and the Netherlands. This field analysis will become the contextual background for the further study, which will focus on the networks and labors of institutional dramaturgs at city-theatres, primarily when it comes to tekst-based theatre. Through a combination of an initial survey and a multiple interview-study, the professional position and the artistic role of the institutional dramaturg will be critically analyzed for its reach, institutional possibilities and artistic labor. This research will result in a deeper understanding of the different strategies institutional dramaturgs use in an art institution and which impact they have and can have on artistic autonomy and creativity.
