This research project intends to synthesize a number of research projects and lines that I have developed in recent years. More specifically, I want to deepen from a global perspective the research I have conducted since the mid-1990s on colonial architecture and urbanization in Central Africa by paying attention to transnational flows of figures, knowledge, models,... while also giving attention to local forms of exchange (e.g., across colonial borders). By doing so, I want to strengthen the argument that Congo, because of its location and specific history, functioned as a 'crossroads' (just like Belgium, for that matter) and its study therefore requires a global perspective, as well as critically test this by also looking at developments in other colonial territories. This research will require fieldwork in a number of former colonial territories and will result in conference contributions, (book) publications, etc.
