Project description

In spite of numerous research, ligament injuries (re)occurence rate remain astonishing high. This project intends to challenge the traditional paradigm of the mechanism of ligament injury and rehabilitation by shifting the main focus from local structures to a more central role for the brain. It is well known that ligament injuries are most commonly caused by deficits in movement control and quality. In this project we hypothesize that this poor biomechanical outcome is associated with alteration in Electroencephalogram (EEG), making the movement less automatic, leading to an slower and deviating biomechanical response to unanticipated changes and therefore leading to an increased risk for a ligament injury.  In addition, we will investigate the influence of rehabilitation training in a virtual reality context since previous research indicates that VRtraining will influence brain activity and thereby ultimatly also movement control.
