Within the Research and Space Department of the Federal Science Policy Office, the STEREO program finances research projects aimed at developing the use of satellite images and satellite image processing techniques, with the aim of improving understanding and better manage our environment. This program also includes an important ‘Promotion and enhancement’ component, the main tool of which is the Belgian Earth Observation website.
During the development of this site (which brings together the information formerly present in the 2 websites EOEdu and Belgian platform for EO), all the sections have been updated, with the exception of the part currently called "Small guide to remote sensing ". The purpose of this section is to provide the general public, but also interested teachers and students, with comprehensible information on Earth observation in general, the modes of acquisition, the characteristics of satellite images and the various processing operations (corrections, compositions , classification...) that can be applied to these images to obtain useful information. All of the techniques involved in these processes and the means of illustrating them have in fact evolved considerably in recent years.
The objective of this project is to provide the Federal Science Policy Office with relevant, up-to-date and intelligently illustrated information on the various themes covered in the current Small guide to Remote sensing (which will probably be renamed 'Understanding Earth Observation'), information that can be directly implemented in the Belgian Earth Observation website.
