This study targets the epidemiology of suicide attempts in Flanders (Belgium). The goals fo the study are twofold: (1) the study of the distribution of suicde attempts in the Flemish general population and (2) the study of factors that influence this distribution. To achieve these goals, a monitoring system has been developed at Accident & Emergency Departments in Flemish general hospitals. Using a standardized interview (IPEO) data on suicide attempters and their attempts are systematically collected. Thesse data are transferred to the Unit for Suicide Research (Ghent University), where data are collected and interpreted in order to formualte advice regarding suicide prevention strategies for the Flemish governement.
