Project description

Background

There are a lot of positive expectations towards Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its impact on health and health systems, such as:

  • making diagnoses faster and more accurate,
  • improving treatments,
  • facilitating integrated working,
  • customised patient support programmes,
  • making it easier for healthcare providers to find data,
  • ...

But of course, there are also important questions related to:

  • the impact on the tasks of healthcare providers,
  • the interaction between healthcare providers and citizens/patients,
  • changing competences and responsibilities,
  • the completeness of AI,
  • the impact on privacy,
  • the possible steering from commercial interests, etc...

Aim and approach

The aim of this study will be to:

  • Conduct a comprehensive SWOC (Strengths Weaknesses Opportunities Challenges) analysis of the impact of AI on health and health systems in the short term:
    • In-depth research based on literature
    • Interviews with clinicians (broadly defined) and providers of AI, among others,
    • With particular focus on AI in health promotion.
  • Future scenarios for AI (horizon 2030-2040) to be elaborated including through interviews:
    • Desirable future scenarios,
    • Non-desirable future scenarios.

Outcome

The research will lead to a report with recommendations and with proposals for further research on the one hand, and a fully elaborated application for a major Grant at the international level on the other hand. Initially, I am thinking of an advanced ERC grant (within Life sciences: Prevention, Diagnosis and Treatment of Human Diseases) or a grant under the EU4Health Programme (EU4H) .
