Project description

Sediments contain a detailed archive of climate and environmental change, and human occupation-migration. Studies of the Quaternary period have mainly focused on the last interglacial-glacial cycle (Late Pleistocene) and the Holocene (< 11700 yrs), in part due to the applicability of specific geochronological methods. The Chibanian (previously “Middle Pleistocene”; ~770000-126000 yrs) has been less explored. Nevertheless, it is during this time that glacial-interglacial fluctuations intensified and modern humans emerged. We intend to investigate the potential of recent developments in chronometric research to access the Chibanian archive and to develop a robust timeframe, which is to be combined with available and new evidence (lithology, chemical, geomorphology, stratigraphy) to reconstruct the environmental conditions during this time segment. This interdisciplinary approach will provide a pivotal chronological and environmental canvas for the study of past hominid societies.
