Project description

My research team aims to discern and modulate intestinal and extra-intestinal effects of chronic gut inflammation. Our primary objective is to unveil novel therapeutic targets for inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD, Crohn's disease and colitis ulcerosa) and gut-driven brain disorders such as fatigue and Parkinson's disease. Four main projects are currently ongoing, for which BOF financing can serve as important add-on financing:

  • Understanding gut-brain signalling in IBD during disease remission
  • Characterization of live, functionally-active gut microbiota in IBD, and its link with fatigue
  • Biomarkers of gut fibrosis in patients with Crohn's disease
  • In vitro modelling of the gut mucosa
  • Bioprinting of gut mucosa for the treatment of ulcerative colitis
  • Understanding the clinical response of stool transplantation in patients with Parkinson’s disease
