Humour and the Anglophone World (HAW) studies how humour shapes democratic participation in Europe. It explores both the positive and negative impacts of humor—in the arts and various cultural outputs, both online and in the real world—on European citizens’ participation in democratic processes. HAW has two main goals to create a more informed, resilient, and engaged democratic society in Europe: (1) Redressing the negative effects of humour on anti-democratic speech, often found in 'humorous' content online, through policy recommendations, tools, and educational resources; and (2) Promoting the positive aspects of humour, especially humor used to challenge anti-democratic and hateful speech, to create and share effective ways to use humour to promote healthy and active participation in democratic processes.
