Project description

Optical satellite links are addressed in this Work Item. Specifically, the effects of turbulence mitigation techniques such as erasure coding, channel interleaving, and ARQ are considered. After a detailed analysis of the literature, the impact of these transmission protection techniques is analysed. A baseline system scenario is defined accounting for the most significant implementation of the optical satellite transmission scheme. The analysis is based on system simulations (performed in MATLAB) encompassing the impairments due to optical transmission (most notably, the effects of turbulence) and accounting for the specifications provided by the CCSDS documents. Different classes of erasure codes and channel interleavers are considered and their performance is assessed by simulation or, if possible, analytically. The ARQ technique is also considered to provide a backup mechanism allowing the eventual transmission of all packets after a delay penalty.
