Food and water borne parasites are important pathogens responsible for substantial public health problems. Moreover, they also cause clinical disease and productivity losses in animals, posing a double burden on society and the farmers.
While these parasites often occur in the Global South, and my research has a strong focus on these areas, there are a number of foodborne parasites which also occur in the EU, Belgium, and on which we conduct studies as well.
Research is oriented towards development and evaluation of diagnostic techniques, epidemiological studies, development and evaluation of control and prevention tools and their implementation via implementation research, thereby ensuring a translation from research into policy and practice. Studies employ a holistic approach, applying the One Health approach with multidisciplinary teams.
