Project description

Chiral liquid crystals have a photonic band gap and efficiently reflect certain wavelength ranges in visible light. By using photoalignment, the helical axis can be tilted in an arbitrary direction. This approach allows to make thin film free-form optical components that can be used in augmented reality applications. Because chiral liquid crystal has an intrinsic short pitch, gratings with very short period (below one micrometer) may be realized, which is useful for lenses with large numerica aperture, or gratings with large angles of diffraction.
