Project description

Within the anatomical pathology laboratory of UZGent, a need (market pull) was identified for the development of a
new and innovative recipient for the collection and processing of small and often fragile biopsies. Anatomical pathology
labs are under high pressure due to the constantly increasing sample quantities. Optimization of workflows through the
introduction of innovation is the only way to maintain high quality standards. The innovative container proposed in this
project adds value at various levels. Firstly, the risk of sample loss is completely eliminated. The processing time is also
three times faster, and the lab technician's exposure to harmful formaldehyde vapours is significantly reduced. Finally,
up to three times less waste is produced. During this project, a prototype device will be developed in collaboration with
a specialized design firm, followed by technical validation. Once a final, validated prototype design is obtained, IP
protection of this invention can proceed. After filing of a patent application, the valorization team will actively seek
industrial partners for further product development.
