Project description

This research project aims to generate a broad and nuanced picture of the visibility of literary translators in the Low Countries and how they take on different discursive roles. Using four cross-sections (1995, 2005, 2015, 2025), the project will zoom in on the (self-)representation of translators and French-Dutch translations, both in (book) publications and in accompanying discourses. In order to study the research material as precisely and nuanced as possible, I will make use of the concept of "discretion", recently studied by Peter Venmans (2019). This way, I aim to transcend the classic dichotomy visibility/invisibility.
