Fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) is anemerging tool for studying biological processes in live,multi-parameter and quantitative manner. Modern FLIM-compatible confocal microscopes equipped with respectivehardware and software enable for fast and high-quality 3Danalysis of cell and tissue oxygenation, metabolism, cellproliferation and differentiation, their response to therapyand infection. While already able addressing requirementsto work with patient-derived tumor xenografts, organoidsand advanced 3D cell and tissue-based models, FLIMsystems are open for next-generation imaging revolution(s)and emerging life science and biomedical research. GhentUniversity and Hospital campus are strategically located inEast Flanders, with strong research connections to otherdepartments, Cancer Research Institute Ghent, Departmentof Pharmaceutics, Ghent Gut Inflammation Group, VIB, keyresearch centres in Flanders, Belgium and abroad, includingFrance, Netherlands and UK. Establishing modern liveimaging white light laser-based confocal FLIM microscopewill catalyse top-level frontier research for Ghent Universityand collaborating teams, facilitate strengthening Ghent andBelgium as centre of academic and entrepreneurialexcellence, in EU-wide and the international landscapes.
