Project description

Vaginitis, presenting with symptoms like vaginal discharge, odor, and itching, is a frequent reason for women seeking healthcare. It is commonly caused by bacterial vaginosis (BV), vaginal candidiasis, or trichomoniasis. Since these symptoms overlap, identifying the cause clinically is difficult, necessitating diagnostics to guide treatment. Current methods rely on microscopy and increasingly PCR. We propose developing a metagenomic-based approach for vaginitis diagnosis. BV is typically treated with metronidazole, but widespread resistance leads to suboptimal outcomes. This project aims to explore peptides as alternative treatments for BV, based on promising preliminary data showing effectiveness against Gardnerella in vitro. Our approach could improve treatment efficacy and reduce resistance-related failures.
