Project description

John Tzetzes is an interesting Byzantine poet and grammarian (12th c.), whose work preserves valuable information about ancient Greek literature. Scholars tend to focus on his Chiliades, Allegoriai on Homer and Epistles. His didactic poem Theogonia, however, has received much less attention, probably because until now there has existed no complete edition of the text. This project aims to fill this gap by preparing the first critical edition of Tzetzes' Theogony, which is a creative paraphrase of Hesiod's Theogony and consists of approximately 855 political verses. My intention is to establish a reliable text by examining its manuscript tradition, its language, its meter and style. Further, I will provide a literary analysis of the text and explore its relation to the historical context.
