Project description

Digitization of the national treasures of a developing country like Cuba is a complex mission. In this proposal we describe how Global Minds can help us with an initial mission in which we plan to catalog different heritage data sources, digitize a couple of sample datasets and interview a number of potential PhD students for a BOF PhD scholarship.

In this mission we will travel to multiple universities and archives in Cuba. This will be a duo-job: prof. De Witte will take his expertise in AI, computer vision and heritage, and Piet Janssen (KBR1) will take his proven experience in third world digitization projects.

In the long run we hope this project will set something in motion, a ‘birth of digital humanities’ in Cuba, with research
opportunities for humanities scholars and computer science researchers.
