physical activity chronic disease in childhood cardiopulmonary exercise test

Project description

Children with chronic disease often exhibit decreased physical activity, fitness and quality of life. This research focuses on mapping exercise capacity and the mechanisms behind reduced exercise capacity by using cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) and new technologies such as near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) during the test.

The research is being conducted in children with cystic fibrosis, chronic asthma, chronic liver and kidney disease, congenital heart defects, children who have undergone oncological treatment, and children who suffer from overweight. A better understanding of the underlying mechanisms of exercise limitations may lead to improved advice for treatment, rehabilitation and further follow-up.

This research is taking place in collaboration with several research groups, including Rehabilitation Sciences and the Department of Sport and Exercise Science, and has already led to several publications and a PhD.
