Project description

Nature conservation is a major concern today. However, we forget that in 20th-century France, during the decline of its rural society, French female authors had already turned to nature writing. Thus, they managed to devote themselves to authorship, despite the fact that women were considered not to have the abstract thinking necessary for literary creation. While this idea is rightly criticised today, some female authors of the past remain unnoticed in literary history. This project will grant these women, some forgotten, some famous, the attention they deserve through an ecopoetic (re)reading. A decade ago, growing environmental awareness led to the rise of "écopoétique” in French literary criticism. Building on ecocriticism, this discipline, which studies the relationships between literature and nature with a focus on the text's form, invites us to revisit the past and (re)discover sometimes overlooked literary works. I will study how and to what extent nature manifests itself throughout the texts of Colette, Bemer-Sauvan, Borrély and Mauron. I will analyse the strategies employed by these authors to depict the mineral, plant, and animal realms, as well as the depth and manner in which they attribute value to nature in their texts. Furthermore, I will examine the influence of places and memories in their portrayal of the natural world. In this way, I will explore the female literary imagination, which doesn't necessarily align with the stereotypes associated with it.
