Project description

Talent Detection and identification at a younger age is more usually associated with the detection of early-mature and therefore physically stronger players. Research on talent identification in young athletes in a multidisciplinary context (morphological, physiological, technical and perceptual-cognitive and / or tactical characteristics) has so far mainly known in football (Philippaerts et al 2004). The handball discipline, however, is much less represented in the literature. The objective of this project is to establish the profile of the (young) talented handball player on morphological, physiological and perceptual-cognitive and perceptual-motor plane. What are the objectives? Objective 1: Based on a literature review and consultation with the stakeholders a sport specific test battery is prepared. Existing reliable and valid tests are inventoried. Objective 2: Is there a difference in potential predictors for (young) handball players of different competition level? This also includes a comparative analysis of youth handball against the Flemish reference (physical fitness). This analysis should allow to distinguish the key performance factors. Among these factors are reference tables (profiles) are arranged. The sample size will have sufficient statistical power. Objective 3: Talent identification and development is a dynamic process. How to evolve some important factors through the development of young handball players to seniors. Through a custom mixed design this question is studied. Objective 4: The role of perceptual skills -cognitieve handball mapping. This is done primarily through descriptive differential research to identify the underlying mechanisms. Secondly, it is checked through a training and learning study how perceptual skills training leads to better performance handball. Realized objectives should allow to develop an optimal model performance for the handball sport.
