This project aims to develop and implement a framework for computationally analysing a large digitised corpus of periodicals of the British suffrage movements in the early twentieth century. Specifically, it aims to develop a method and workflow for identifying and analysing poetry reuse in these periodicals. To galvanize and legitimize the campaign, British suffrage periodicals quoted profusely from well-known English canonical poets and from the poetry of earlier social movements, notably the abolitionist and workers’ movements. Because of the idiosyncratic ways in which this poetry was quoted, basic text reuse detection methods have not yielded adequate results. The aim of this project is to develop and test a more finetuned method that can deal with these challenges efficiently and successfully. This method will be useful beyond the scope of the project, for analysing text reuse in various kinds of historical corpora.
