Project description

Deep Into Nature tells the story of the ‘ecological self’ in the Greek culture of the Roman world (1st-5th c. C.E.). While studies on selfhood have significantly enhanced our understanding of certain aspects of the Roman self, the time is ripe for revising them in light of modern ecological thought. The project’s aim is to analyse the presence of a permeable and porous ‘ecological self’ in instances of environmental immersion as depicted in the Greek literature and art of the Roman world, and to explore what these representations reveal about imperial constructions of selfhood, as well as imperial ecological sensibilities.
