Belgium is taking a leading position in the transition towards a hydrogen economy thanks to many companies and research institutes active in hydrogen technologies. UGent-MMS focuses on an important link in the future hydrogen economy, being the storage of hydrogen in pressurized composite tanks, both in the vehicle itself as in refueling stations.
UGent-MMS is partner in a large VLAIO ICON research project (COMFHY, VAISTB2024001401) with several leading companies in the automotive industry, and has also a FWO PhD fellowship on this topic (FWO3F02023008701). The research projects aim at developing composite solutions for future hydrogen storage tanks.
In total, there are 4 PhD students and 1 postdoc working on this topic. The BOF Basic Funding will be used to foresee backup funding for the 4th year of the three PhD’s on the VLAIO ICON project, to extend the contract of the postdoc and add extra consumables for publication fees and travelling to conferences.
