The PhD aims to develop an improved legal protective framework for underwater cultural heritage in the Belgian North Sea. The research focusses on existing (inter)national instruments, comparative legal research on the legislation of neighbouring states and evaluates how marine spatial planning can contribute to such protection. Some specific issues are examined as well, including the protection of maritime war graves.
