Project description

This project aims at the further development and application of non-destructive quantitative approaches for elemental/structural micro/nano-analysis based on the use of laboratory and synchrotron X-ray imaging methodologies. This includes the optimization of three-dimensional (3D) X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and computer tomography (CT) based data acquisition strategies making use of a self-developed laboratory XRF-CT scanner. The latter instrument combines confocal XRF analysis, XRF tomography and absorption μCT which, to our knowledge, is currently unique in the world. The proposed work will focus on the development of dedicated (quantitative) reconstruction algorithms for XRF-CT based elemental/structural imaging and the complementary use of synchrotron based micro/nano-XRF, diffraction and absorption spectroscopic techniques for applications in the field of Earth and planetary science. Specifically, the combined elemental/structural analysis approach will be employed for compositional studies on carbonate and carbonatitic inclusions in rare deep mantle diamonds and unique ultra-refractory Ca-Al-rich inclusions in meteoritic materials with the ultimate goal to (a) better understand Earth’ deep mantle processes and (b) to reconstruct conditions and processes for the first solids that were formed in our Solar System, providing information on the first few million years of its existence.
