Project description

The south of West Flanders stands out archaeologically due to the presence of an elite settlement on the Kemmelberg. This site is characterised by its fortifications and indications of a rich material culture with the presence of a number of Mediterranean imports, which points to the participation of irs inhabitants in the elite networks during the late Hallstatt and early La Tène period in Europe. Various traces of rural settlements have been found in the hinterland of this site. The aim of this study is to shed light on the relationship of the Kemmelberg with other elite sites as well as the relationships of this site with its hinterland by studying the pottery found in the area. An innovative archaeometric approach is chosen with a technological analysis of the pottery production combined with geochemical characterisation of the pottery and the regional clay using h-XRF and petrographic research. The characterisation of the various pottery categories will provide insight into the nature of the international contacts and their impact on local pottery production and consumption, as well as how the site and its pottery production relates to the local communities in its hinterland.
