Project description

Chito-oligosaccharides (COS) are among the most versatile and promising bio-molecules, with a wide range of applications such as in the pharmaceutical, cosmetics and agricultural sectors. To date, however, their economic potential remains far from being fully exploited due to i) reproducibility problems of biological activities and ii) the risk of allergens due to their animal origin. InBio was developed a biotechnological alternative to current extraction methods based on crustacea that eliminates the barriers to market penetration by producing COS with a specific polymerization (DP) and acetylation degree (DA) and pattern of acetylation (PA) in vivo. However, to unlock the valorization potential of this technology, a number of hurdles still need to be taken. All these planned actions are aimed at the development of previously developed technology and the valorization of the knowledge, expertise and research results of more than 5 years of research in the context of multiple research projects.
