Project description

Resistant bacteria pose a threat to both animal and human health. For several bacterial diseases in poultry, antimicrobial treatments are no longer effective or even prohibited for use. Resistant bacteria can also be transmitted form animals to humans. The use of antimicrobials is considered the main cause of the development of resistance. To reduce ise, alternatives must be used. A new innovative strategy is the mRNA vaccination platform. Recent research, conducted under my supervision and in collaboration with colleague Prof. Niek Sanders showed that this vaccination platform is promising for use in poultry (phd defense of Janne Snoeck planned for January 16, 2025). The funding obtained will therefore be used to further develop this vaccination strategy, in which mRNA vaccines against relevant viral and/or bacterial poultry pathogens will be developed.
