To address declining academic performance, UGent has been using the orientation test SIMON since 2015, which has now been taken by more than 70,000 students. SIMON is a test of cognitive and non-cognitive skills and study interests, providing personalized study advice and guiding at-risk students towards remediation and academic counseling. SIMON generated an extremely large longitudinal dataset that allows for the investigation of academic achievement, study interests, and student counseling, which has resulted in three completed doctoral theses. Central research funding to support and further optimize the project and the generated study advice recently ended and could not be continued due to budgetary constraints. In this project, basic funding will be used to address open research questions, such as the effectiveness of feedback reports for activating students and the longitudinal alignment of studies with the labor market.
