Project description

This project will study the characteristics and recurrence rate of giant earthquakes in South-Central Chile. The shaking strength of some prehistorical earthquakes will be quantified, based on a multi-tool geotechnical study of lacustrine slope stability and sediment behavior during seismic shaking. New paleoseismic archives will further allow discriminating between those past earthquakes that ruptured the whole zone, and the less extensive ones.
