- Comparative literature studies
This project develops a transcultural contact history of Afrikaans and Dutch. It asks how international and cross-border perspectives may nuance predominantly nationalist literature histories from a global perspective. The project’s methodological foundations were developed during a research fellowship at Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study (2024). Basic funding will also be utilized for follow-up research into the works of Breyten Breytenbach. The research will be conducted in dialogue with researchers affiliated with universities in South Africa. In conjunction with the VisionKeeper project ‘Imagining Africa’ (University of South Africa), references to viewpoints of cultural and political thinkers of Africa in Breytenbach’s work will be examined. Archival work will be conducted at the Gorée Institute and will provide material for the monograph Breytenbach & his Inner Africas. Further scholarly publications will emphasize pan-African thought and Breytenbach’s oeuvre.
