Project description
The Roman culture is particularly known for its impressive architectural realisations. Large-scale building required a well-organised supply system for the building and decorative stone. Despite the importance of decorative stone in the Roman World, their trade and distribution remains poorly understood. This project will study the economy of decorative stone on a regional scale. An in-depth assessment of the use of decorative stone will reveal important new insights in the social-economic mechanism that were involved in the large-scale import and export of decorative stone in the Roman World.
