The proposed research will address the puzzling observation that EU involvement in conflict mediation in its wider neighbourhood is highly inconsistent, whereby it engages in the mediation of some conflicts but not in others. Using a combination of Qualitative Comparative Analysis and process-tracing, it will map the different forms of EU engagement and examine the causal conditions explaining this variation.
