Environmental degradation is causing millions of people to flee their environment. 'Environmental refugees' do not fit within the current international refugee definition. The research objective is to set forth solutions for the recognition and protection of environmental refugees, by an adaptation of existing mechanisms or the elaboration of a new protection regime, from the perspective of the European Union as a 'host' region for environmental refugees.
